Among the continents, South America is fourth in size and fifth in population. Foods of South America include chiles, tomatoes, potatoes, corn, quinoa, amaranth, cassava, chayote, and jicama. No one knows whether corn was first domesticated in Central or South America; it was being grown in the Andes at least 4000 years.

a few things said by South Americans:

"Your emperor may be a great prince; I do not doubt it, seeing that he has sent his subjects so far across the waters; and I am willing to treat him as a brother. As for your pope of whom you speak, he must be mad to speak of giving away countries that do not belong to him. As for my faith, I will not change it. Your own god, as you tell me, was put to death by the very men he created. But my god still looks down on his children." —Atahualpa

"When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist." —Archbishop Dom Helder Camara

"Write what should not be forgotten." —Isabel Allende

"To do something right it must be done twice. The first time instructs the second." —Simon Bolivar

"Someday, somewhere— anywhere, unfailingly, you'll find yourself, and that, and only that, can be the happiest or bitterest hour of your life." —Pablo Neruda
